Stop the Federal Government from buying Big Summit Prairie
Recently there was a plan by the United States Forest Service under Biden / Harris administration to purchase half of Big Summit Prairie with help from conservation groups.
This plan has been put on hold for 1 year.
As a community we need to tell the United States Forest Service our thoughts on the federal government buying and managing this almost 10,000 acres of private land in Crook County.
Big Summit Prairie has the capacity to graze over 1000 head of cattle each year. Taking the property out of production would greatly reduce the amount of possible cattle production, have a negative impact on our local economy and a cause a major cultural shift here in our community.
If this property is under the United States Forest Service control there would be no taxes collected, the federal government would be in charge of the land, fire management and some of the most important water rights across the entire crooked river water shed.
The United States Forest Service should not be buying more of our county when they are currently unable to manage the land that they already control.
This is eerily similar to when the federal government tried to condemn this section of Big Summit Prairie from Les Schwab back in the 80’s using condemnation because it was such a unique environment that it must be owned and managed by the federal government.
Please sign this petition if you believe that the federal government owns enough land in Crook County.
